A USA patient decided to get his gall bladder removed in India. He chose Indian Health Guru Consultants for laproscopic cholesystectomy (gall bladder removal).

Mark Nelson, Michigan Patient on his laproscopic cholesystectomy surgery in India-

“I am a resident of Michigan, USA decided to get my gall bladder removal surgery (laproscopic cholesystectomy) done in India. I had been suffering from gall bladder stones for the last three years .I had taken medicines for stone removal but they brought only temporary relief. My condition was worsening day by day. I was suffering from acute stomach ache and vomiting constantly. The pain hampered his every day life. My doctor advised me to undergo gall bladder removal surgery as a permanent solution to the problem. I learnt about Indian Health Guru Consultants by searching the web for better options for gall bladder surgery than were available in USA. I found that the wait for the surgery was too long and I could not even endure the thought of prolonging my misery through that long wait. The second factor was cost. Being uninsured I couldn’t afford the high cost of surgery in USA.  After learning about Indian Health Guru Consultants I e- mailed my medical reports to Dr. Dheeraj Bojwani. I am highly pleased with the prompt action that Dr. Dheeraj took in my case. I received very quick replies to my e mails. I got the answers as soon as I sent the mails. Thanks to Dr. Dheeraj, all formalities regarding my visa and travel arrangements and hotel stay were done at a lightening speed. I was in Mumbai just 15 days later and was driven straight to the hospital. Dr. Dheeraj was there to personally look after all the arrangements. The surgery was performed on the very next day and in three days’ time I was out of the hospital. I must especially thank Dr. Dheeraj for arranging the sightseeing trip in Mumbai and to the historical Ajanta caves. I could return back to Michigan and resume work very quickly. My surgery and the holiday in India cost just a fraction of what I would have spent on the surgery in USA

India has become the uncontested leader in the delivery of healthcare of international standards within the Asian subcontinent. India has become the healthcare destination for the global community. Many USA patients prefer to get their surgery in India rather than wait for their insurance providers to approve their surgery procedures. It is common knowledge that the uninsured population in America cannot afford the high surgery costs of Laproscopic cholesystectomy  surgery. Resultantly, there has been a surge of resident Americans to travel abroad for surgery. This trend is extending to the non-resident Indians as well. Many Indians have settled in other countries like Canada, Australia, UK and UAE for various reasons. Most of these International patients prefer India as their choice for surgery.

The India hospitals and clinics that cater to the tourist market are among the best in the world, and many are staffed by physicians trained at major medical centers in the United States and Europe. India hospitals perform nearly 15,000 heart operations every year, and the death rate among patients during surgery is only 0.8 percent–less than half that of most major hospitals in the United States. In India hospitals are backed by sophisticated research infrastructures as well. India is among the world’s leading countries for biotechnology research, while both India and South Korea are pushing ahead with stem cell research at a level approached only in Britain. In many foreign clinics, too, the doctors are supported by more registered nurses per patient than in any Western facility, and some clinics provide single-patient rooms that resemble guestrooms in four-star hotels, with a nurse dedicated to each patient 24 hours a day. Add to this the fact that some clinics assign patients a personal assistant for the post-hospital recovery period and throw in a vacation incentive as well, and the deal gets even more attractive. Additionally, many Asian airlines offer frequent-flyer miles to ease the cost of returning for follow-up visits.

In the past 30 years, the costs of health care have soared in developed countries, especially in the United States. Due to rapidly escalating health care costs, Americans, Europeans, Canadians and Australians in ever increasing numbers began to search for alternatives that could reduce their personal out of pocket medical expenses. In the last few years, millions of people from developed nations have chosen to become Medical Tourists.  Indian fees for medical and surgical care are very low compared to what is paid in the United States, Europe or Australia. In some cases, the savings from dental work alone can give people extra money for a luxury vacation. Medical Tourism can certainly be a win-win proposition. While taking care of health needs at deep discounts, shopping excursions, river tours, sight-seeing, nature excursions, intellectual pursuits, religious pilgrimages, cruises, ancient site tours, safari’s, hunting or fishing trips and visits to international beaches can all be arranged around a medical appointment schedule.  Medical Tourism is a simple concept: people combine medical treatments with vacations, and use the savings on their medical care to pay for the vacation.

Travel to India for your Laparoscopic Gall Bladder surgery

What is the Gall Bladder?

The Gall Bladder is a pear-shaped sac that rests beneath the right side of the liver. Its main purpose it to collect and concentrate a digestive agent (bile) produced by the liver. Bile is released from the Gall Bladder and travels through the cystic and common bile ducts (narrow tubular channels) to the small intestine.

The Laparoscopic Gall Bladder removal surgery is usually done to treat the following conditions:

  • Gall Bladder disease
    • Gallstones
    • Infection or inflammation (cholecystitis)
    • Gall Bladder cancer
  • Biliary dyskinesia (abnormal Gall Bladder function)

What preparation is required in Laparoscopic Gall Bladder Surgery?

The following includes typical events that may occur prior to laparoscopic surgery; however, since each patient and surgeon is unique, what will actually occur may be different:

 ·    Preoperative preparation includes blood work, medical evaluation, chest x-ray and an EKG depending on your age and medical condition.

·    After the surgeon reviews with the potential risks and benefits of the operation, patient will need to provide written consent for surgery.

·    Surgeon may request that patient should completely empty his colon and cleanse his intestines prior to surgery. Patient may be requested to drink clear liquids, only, for one or several days prior to surgery.

·    It is recommended that to shower the night before or morning of the operation.

·    After midnight the night before the operation, patient should not eat or drink anything except medications that surgeon has told which are permissible to take with a sip of water the morning of surgery.

·    Drugs such as aspirin, blood thinners, anti-inflammatory medications (arthritis medications) and Vitamin E will need to be stopped temporarily for several days to a week prior to surgery.

·    Diet medication should not be used for the two weeks prior to surgery.

How well does Laparoscopic Gall Bladder Surgery Work:

Laparoscopic Gall Bladder surgery is safe and effective. Surgery gets rid of gallstones located in the Gall Bladder. It does not remove stones in the common bile duct. Gallstones can form in the common bile duct years after the Gall Bladder is removed, although this is not common.

Who is the candiddate for Laparoscopic Gall Bladder Surgery:

Since the advent of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, this procedure has become the gold-standard for Gall Bladder removal. Most patients with symptomatic gallstones are candidates for laparoscopic cholecystectomy, if they are able to tolerate general anesthesia and have no serious cardiopulmonary diseases or other coexisting conditions that preclude operation.

Some patients with very serious complications from Gall Bladder disease may not be eligible for laparoscopic Gall Bladder removal. In addition, patients in the third trimester of pregnancy should not usually undergo laparoscopic cholecystectomy, because of risk of damage to the uterus during the procedure.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the first trimester of pregnancy remains controversial because of the unknown effects of carbon dioxide on the developing fetus.

Who shouldn’t have Laparoscopic Gall Bladder Surgery?

If a person had surgery around his Gall Bladder before, if he tend to bleed a lot, or if he has any problem that would make it hard for doctor to see his Gall Bladder, an open surgery may be better for him. Doctor will decide which type of surgery is appropriate

The Laparoscopic Gall Bladder Surgery Procedure

Gall Bladder removal surgery is called for when gallstones have formed, blocking the flow of bile and leading to attacks that can cause severe pain and discomfort. With the invention of the laparoscopic procedure, the surgery can now be performed through several small openings, can be completed in one to three hours, and has a much shorter recovery time. During a laparoscopic Gall Bladder surgery, a tube carrying a video camera is inserted through an incision in the navel. The surgery is then performed under the guidance of this camera. Tiny instruments are used to cut and clip the ducts and arteries attached to the Gall Bladder and to remove the Gall Bladder from the body.

What to expect after Laparoscopic Gall Bladder Surgery?

Gall Bladder removal is a major abdominal operation and a certain amount of postoperative pain occurs. Nausea and vomiting are not uncommon. Once liquids or a diet is tolerated, patients leave the hospital the same day or day following the laparoscopic Gall Bladder surgery. Activity is dependent on how the patient feels. Walking is encouraged. Patients can remove the dressings and shower the day after the operation. Patients will probably be able to return to normal activities within a week’s time, including driving, walking up stairs, light lifting and working. In general, recovery should be progressive, once the patient is at home. The onset of fever, yellow skin or eyes, worsening abdominal pain, distention, persistent nausea or vomiting, or drainage from the incision are indications that a complication may occur. Most patients who have a laparoscopic Gall Bladder removal go home from the hospital the day after surgery. Some may even go home the same day the operation is performed. Most patients can return to work within seven days following the laparoscopic procedure depending on the nature of your job. Patients with administrative or desk jobs usually return in a few days while those involved in manual labor or heavy lifting may require a bit more time. Patients undergoing the open procedure usually resume normal activities in four to six weeks.

What are the benefits of Laparoscopic Gall Bladder Surgery?

With laparoscopic cholecystectomy, you may return to work more quickly, have less pain after surgery, have a shorter hospital stay, and have a shorter recovery time. Unlike traditional surgery, laparoscopic surgery to remove the Gall Bladder can be done without cutting the muscles of your abdomen. The incision is also much smaller. With laparoscopic cholecystectomy; you probably will only have to stay in the hospital overnight. With open cholecystectomy, you would need to stay in the hospital for about 5 days. Because the incisions are smaller with laparoscopic cholecystectomy, there isn’t as much pain after this operation as after open cholecystectomy. Most patients do very well and recover rapidly. For laparoscopic Gall Bladder surgery, your hospital stay is likely to be shorter, and you may be home within 24 hours. Your recovery time is likely to be shorter as well.

Benefits of Cholecystectomy Surgery In India

cholecystectomy.gif

What is a Cholecystetomy?

Cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder, which is located in the abdomen beneath the right side of the liver. Gallbladder problems are usually the result of gallstones. These stones may block the flow of bile from your gallbladder, causing the organ to swell. Other causes include cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder) and cholangitis (inflammation of the bile duct).

Purpose of getting Cholecystectomy Surgery done:

A cholecystectomy is performed to treat cholelithiasis and cholecystitis. In cholelithiasis, gallstones of varying shapes and sizes form from the solid components of bile. The presence of these stones, often referred to as gallbladder disease, may produce symptoms of excruciating right upper abdominal pain radiating to the right shoulder.

The gallbladder may become the site of acute infection and inflammation, resulting in symptoms of upper right abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. This condition is referred to as cholecystitis. The surgical removal of the gallbladder can provide relief of these symptoms. Cholecystectomy is used to treat both acute and chronic cholecystitis when there are significant pain symptoms. The typical composition of gallstones is predominately cholesterol, or a compound called calcium bilirubinate.

 Preparation before Cholecystetomy Surgery:

Stop smoking and get your weight down. If you know that you have problems with your blood pressure, your heart, or your lungs, ask your family doctor to check that these are under control. Check the hospital’s advice about taking the pill or hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Check you have a relative or friend who can come with you to hospital, take you home, and look after you for the first week after the operation. Bring all your tablets and medicines with you to hospital. On the ward, you may be checked for past illnesses and may have special tests, ready for the operation. Many hospitals now run special preadmission clinics, where you visit for an hour or two, a few weeks or so before the operation for these checks.

Procedure of Cholecystectomy Surgery:

Open cholecystectomy:
This is the “traditional” surgical technique for removing the gallbladder and is performed under a general anaesthetic. A single incision is made below the rib cage.  Through the incision the surgeon can view the area and remove the gallbladder. The cystic duct is tied off or closed with surgical clips.  The common bile duct is left intact.  The incision in the skin is closed with dissolvable stitches or staples. If staples are used, they will be removed 7-10 days after the operation.  A hospital stay of up to five days is common after open cholecystectomy.Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy :

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is less invasive than an open cholecystectomy and is the most commonly used surgical technique for removing the gallbladder. It has a faster recovery time and a shorter hospital stay.In a laparoscopic cholecystectomy four small incisions are made in the abdomen.  A telescope-like instrument (a laparoscope) is inserted through one incision and surgical instruments are inserted through the other incisions. The laparoscope has a camera and a light on its tip allowing the surgeon to view the inside of the abdominal cavity on a television monitor.  The abdominal cavity is then inflated with carbon dioxide gas to provide a clear field of vision and to give the surgeon room to operate.  The gallbladder is located and the cystic duct is tied off or closed with surgical clips.  The gallbladder is then removed through an incision in the belly button (umbilicus).  The incisions in the abdomen are closed with paper tapes (steri-strips) and are covered with small waterproof dressings. The operation is performed under general anaesthetic and the patient can usually be discharged after a one-night stay in hospital. Cholecystectomy may be delayed if there is acute inflammation of the gallbladder.  Antibiotics may also be given if cholecystitis is present. When the gallbladder is removed, bile is still produced by the liver and excreted through the bile duct.  Instead of being stored by the gallbladder until needed, it flows directly into the duodenum and is excreted from the body.

After the Surgery of Cholecystectomy – In Hospital

If you have had the keyhole operation, your wounds are injected with a pain-killing drug during the operation. They are usually only a little uncomfortable. Ask for tablets or even injections if the wounds are troubling you. You may notice some discomfort in your shoulder tips for a day or two. The special gas used to help the surgeon see clearly in your tummy during the operation causes this. It settles down. If you have had the open operation, the wound is painful and you will be given injections and later tablets to control this. Ask for more if the pain is still unpleasant. A general anaesthetic will make you slow, clumsy and forgetful for about 24 hours. Do not make important decisions during that time.
If you have had the keyhole operation you will have 4 little wounds; if you have had the open operation you will have just one wound. The wounds will have a dressing, which may show some staining with old blood in the first 24 hours. In the keyhole operation the wound dressings will be changed before you go home if they are stained. Keep the dressings on for a week until you are seen at a follow up visit. In the open operation there may be stitches or clips in the skin. Any plastic drain tube is removed when it stops draining – usually after 48 hours. If there is a thick tube, this means you have needed an additional procedure to get rid of misplaced stones. This drain is taken out after 10 days. You can wash the wound area as soon as the dressing has been removed. Soap and tap water are entirely adequate. Salted water is not necessary. After the keyhole operation most patients can go home the day after the operation. Some can even go home the same day. You can stay longer if you are not feeling fit enough to go home so soon. For the open operation, if you have only had a gallbladder removal, plan to go home in 5 days after the operation. If you have had more done, 10 days is a sensible time for planning. Please ask the nurses about sick notes, certificates etc.
